It’s happened to me, and it will happen to you. Someone drops a name like Friendster or Livejournal and a lightbulb goes off… “I wonder if my profile is still up?” And like always, it’s right there just as you left it. Those sites, forever gone from your brain, are now opened up before you like a highschool yearbook, and all of a sudden, you dont know what to do with it. Should you delete it, edit it or just leave it as is? I guess that all depends on how you define your past. In many cases you read old blog posts that you would have rather never written. Other times you just wish you wouldn’t have stumbled back on it, because of the place it puts you in to re-read it. But I think the thing that gets most people are the old profile pictures. Ludicrous acts of youth, oh the hair, what were we thinking?
What you do with your long lost profiles is up to you. I like to keep mine around. It will be interesting to rediscover them 5-10 years from now, but by that time, who knows what will have happened… Google will buy facebook for 78 trillion, and 6 months later everyone will be using mylivefacespace.com, leaving facebook like a bad restaraunt. The one thing that is for sure is that you will probably be outlived by your online you. And maybe that’s a good thing… sort of comforting… you’ll still get the messages, you’ll just take way too long to write back.
